Social media has provided us ways to meet people outside our sphere of influence. Back before online dating we met people when we were out at bars or clubs that we frequented. Occasionally, friends and relatives would introduce us to someone that they thought would be a good match. This created an accountability for actions that seems to have dissipated in the modern world. Accountability has been replaced with invisibility because of the ease to hide behind the screen. In turn, it has desensitized us to others’ feelings and emotions.
Back when Aunt Ida was playing matchmaker you dare not put a mark on your reputation. And so your actions after meeting that person were cordial and respectful. There was tact involved and integrity because feedback was imminent. Now that geo-locater determines your fate, tact and etiquette are thrown out the window. You don’t think twice about throwing someone on the back burner. And so ensues today’s world of no accountability. Although it may be easier to have technology be your wingman, values shouldn’t be mutually exclusive.
Just remember, even if you forget to have proper etiquette on a date, karma doesn’t.
