Being Single During the Holidays

It’s that time of year again. Holiday galore which include parties, twinkling lights and happy couples all surrounding you. There is no other extended stretch of time that highlights, circles and bolds your lack of a romantic partner than the holidays.  From Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day, us, singletons are faced with a bombardment of social cues from family, friends and social media. These cues leave us feeling inadequate and sad with an ever-growing longing for that special someone to kiss under the mistletoe.

Yes, it sucks. But, you are not alone. We’re in this boat with you. We get it. We know all the negatives that inevitably come with being single during the holiday season; but let’s rethink this and try to put a positive spin on it, shall we? This one comes down to attitude. Attitude is everything! Staying positive makes a big difference.

1. One and Done. There are no arguments over whose family you have to visit first. There is no issue with splitting time. You just have to deal with one annoying family, not two. You are granted the gift of peace. And think about it, there are less obligations to deal with people that you wouldn’t even pick to visit if there was an apocalypse and they were the last house to ever stock Cheezits.

2. To: Me, Love: Me.  Less people to buy presents for. More to spend on YOU. Being that this is a less than savory time, we suggest buying yourself presents that bring up your feel-good quotient. A massage, Lady GaGa’s new color palette, gourmet Belgian chocolates, perhaps a new tattoo (this will also undoubtedly piss off at least one member of your family: Win-Win!!) Whatever the desire, do it.

3.The World Is Your Oyster in 2020! You can think about all the possibilities that a new year can bring. New year, new decade, new start. You can write your own story; as long as it doesn’t get featured on Dateline.

Listen, we are not trying to sugar coat the shitty feeling that comes with being single, especially around the holidays. It is way more comforting to come home with your significant other, re-galing the crazy holiday event where Aunt Ida flashed little Johnny when she picked up her cane versus walking into an empty house, with no one other than your parrot and your goldfish to talk to. But, sometimes we just have to focus on the half-filled portion of the cup to get through the season.
