So, you made it through the big holidays but you ain’t done yet. There’s one more. And it’s the one that pre-empts the big heart day. Yup…New Year’s. The day of expectations, significant others, engagements and ringing the night in with the person you plan to have an extraordinary year with. Except. You don’t have anybody. There’s no one to ring in the New Year with. An obvious void takes you in and reminds you; bolded, capped and underlined: YOU ARE SINGLE.
You are reminded of how single you are when you are out with your friends dreading the moment when the ball drops and you become surrounded by lip-locked couples welcoming the year ahead. Superstition says starting the year off by kissing someone will bring a year of luck into your love life. Does tonguing a bottle of Tito’s count? Or perhaps, Jack Daniels?
New Year’s is one exception where you are allowed to look back on your past because replaying the year helps you make better choices for the new one. However, on this day in particular we feel you should do whatever you need to comfort yourself. It’s really just another day. You’ve already been through enough since Thanksgiving. So whether you are out with friends or staying in reading a good book don’t put too much pressure on yourself. This night is not symbolic of how the rest of your life is going to go.
